Profile
A mysterious and powerful weapon, Masamune is perhaps the greatest of all the various blades in the known universe. Meant as a sword fit for a divine entity, it is immeasurably sharp and can never dull. The blade is lengthy, nearly as long as most people are tall, and has eight marble-sized holes in its hilt. Masamune has several noteworthy extra-physical properties. First, though the mass of the blade is impossible to determine, any person to hold it (though few have) would report that it seemed to weigh about a kilogram, or 2.2 pounds on Earth. Furthermore, when the sword is thrust, its weight shifts forward, significantly augmenting the force of the swing. This sort of responsive balancing makes the weapon ideal in all dueling scenarios, in spite of its nigh ridiculous length. Masamune, as a number of personnel can attest to, is extraordinarily difficult to parry. The blade almost vanishes while in motion, which when added to its light, shifting weight makes the agile edge almost impossible to mount a defense against. The cumulative result of the blade's design is that anyone could competently wield Masamune in one day as if they had used it for years. That, however, does not account for the entirety of its strength.

On the rare occasions which someone other than Sephroth has held Masamune, it has been noted that the nature of the blade itself was altered. Wise men have said that the warrior behind the weapon is more vital than the quality of the sword itself, and for Masamune this appears to be very true in a literal sense. The artifact somehow draws character from its user, as if their very essence could become a part of it. Masamune behaves identically for no two people, and to date only Sephroth seems to be able to tap his weapon to the fullest extent, judging by the speed with which he is able to do so. In his hands, the blade seems cold and dark, broadcasting a nameless evil and moving at a speed which mocks light itself. When others have used it, the blade has lost its considerable swiftness, but gained something in the way of power, shining brightly in a pulsating aura of white. This is, of course, in part due to Sephroth's mastery of the weapon, and further study is required to determine the nature of its potential.

History
Sightings of Masamune can be found periodically in various Eastern myths. Earth, in general, is a poor source of magical relics, with only a scarce few locations providing anything of value. One of these places, something of a great mystery in itself, is the ancient Tower of Babel. Claimed to have been constructed as a bridge to the heavens, it was most extraordinary in its seclusion. It is fair to say that the tower hid itself, that it somehow had been built beyond conventional terrestrial land and thus could be stumbled upon by a vagrant, yet never detected by any modern surveillance devices. Sephroth, or rather the demon that came to possess him in a previous body, found his way there somehow, and fought through the timeless corridors to the top of the structure. There, he made several requests of the tower, the first of which was to grant him a weapon fit for a god. 'He who has no name' retained ownership of Masamune even between stays on the mortal coil, and ultimately rose to power with it after becoming one with Sephroth. On a related thought, the Tower of Babel was destroyed following Sephroth's most recent resurrection.

Following Sephroth's appointment as Head of Security at Blizzard Entertainment, the eight slots in the handle of Masamune were used to summon forth a group of goblins based upon the seven biblical sins. After inserting one unusual marble, Sephroth needed only to take a life with the blade in order to release the evils. This suggests the sword is able to serve as a conduit of sorts, but since that first application no use of the slots has been observed.

The most interesting events in the known history of the sword came during Sephroth's campaign to slaughter an assortment of dragons. At two points, Masamune was lost to the demon, and temporarily retrieved by a CWALer. The first time this occurred, Dragoneyes took up the weapon, which then began to glow a pure white. The second incident involved the infamous Lothos, who caused Masamune to also glow brightly, but with eerie streaks of red mottled about the white aura. This is interpreted to indicate his good yet chaotic nature. In any case, the CWALers attempted to cripple Sephroth's plans by discarding Masamune into the ocean, but it returned to the dark warrior in a tidal wave the next day.

Though known to be the cause of several dozen deaths since these events, no further noteworthy uses of Masamune have occurred.
